What Does “Leave It” Actually Mean?
At its heart, 'Leave It' is a lesson in proactive impulse control. Rather than forcing your dog away physically, you are teaching them to make a voluntary decision to disengage from a tempting distraction and look to you instead. It builds focus through cooperation, not restriction. The AKC says a strong “leave it” means you decide what is safe to eat, not your dog.
The Vital Difference
Leave It (Prevention): Instructs your dog to completely ignore an item before they touch it. It stops the approach and keeps their boundaries clear.
Drop It (Release): Instructs your dog to release an object that is already in their mouth. This acts as your critical secondary safety net.
