The AKC says breeds bred for hunting, including Hounds, Terriers, Sporting, and Herding breeds, commonly have strong prey drives, and that passing birds can make walks challenging. The AKC also notes that Sporting Group breeds were developed to seek out downed birds and return them in one piece, rather than attack them. PDSA describes prey drive as the hunting instinct and offers advice for dogs that chase squirrels or birds on walks. Knowing why dog breeds that chase birds react so strongly to flying birds makes training much easier.
